The Wichita Association for the Motion Picture Arts (WAMPA) and the Tallgrass Film Festival announced the line-up for its fifth outdoor summer film series, WAMPA’s Cinema Alfresco. The program will take place every Tuesday from June 5 to July 10, 2007 on the patio at Yai Yai’s Eurobistro, 8115 East 21st Street in the Bradley Fair Shopping Center.
This year’s theme, “One Word Says It All”, features “single-word title” films chosen (see complete list below) by the Tallgrass Film Festival’s Programming Committee, with selections ranging from Harvey (1950), a comedy of errors starring Jimmy Stewart; to the original Shaft (1971), directed by Kansas native Gordon Parks; and the gritty, Oscar® winning, thriller, Traffic (2000).
The free screenings will begin at 8:45 PM with a brief introduction by a member of the Tallgrass Film Festival Programming Committee, followed by the film itself at 9:00 PM. Each program will also include a bonus short film from past Tallgrass Film Festivals, in celebration of the 5th annual festival this October 19th-21st.
Shaft (1971) 98 minutes, R, Dir. Gordon Parks
Directed by Kansas Native Gordon Parks, Shaft tells the story of a black private detective, John Shaft, who travels through Harlem and the Italian mob in order to find the missing daughter of a black mobster. It stars Richard Roundtree as Shaft, Moses Gunn as Bumpy Jonas, Charles Cioffi as Lt. Vic Androzzi and features the most memorable movie theme song of all time.
Avalon (1990) 127 minutes, PG, Dir. Barry Levinson
From the Oscar-winning director of Good Morning, Vietnam, Diner and Rain Man comes Avalon, Barry Levinson's critically-acclaimed, semi-autobiographical masterpiece. Intensely personal and yet universally appealing, Avalon follows immigrant Sam Krichinsky and his extended family as they seek a dream called America in a place called Avalon. From poverty through prosperity, the Krichinsky family faces a changing world with enduring humor and abiding love.

Vertigo (1958) 128 minutes, PG, Dir. Alfred Hitchcock
In this Hitchcock thriller, Jimmy Stewart plays John "Scottie" Ferguson, a retired San Francisco police detective who suffers from acrophobia and Madeleine is the lady who leads him to high places. An acquaintance approaches Scottie and asks him to follow his wife, Madeleine. He fears she is going insane, because she believes she is possessed by a dead ancestor.

Traffic (2000) 147 minutes, R, Dir. Steven Soderbergh
Oscar winning, modern day look at America's war on drugs examined through four interconnecting stories with characters from different social standings, showing how drugs have the power to impact everyone's life in one way or another, The film is spellbinding and thought-provoking from beginning to end. Star-studded cast includes Michael Douglas, Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Luis Guzman, Dennis Quaid, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Alien (1979) 116 minutes, R, Dir. Ridley Scott
Director Ridley Scott's breakthough film, a successful blend of horror and science fiction, is definitive in both genres and spawned a host of sequels and imitators. A mining ship, investigating a suspected SOS, lands on a distant planet. When one of the eggs discovered is disturbed, the crew does not know the danger they are in until it is too late. The film stars Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Ian Holm and John Hurt. A horror classic that has stood the test of time!
Harvey (1950) 104 minutes, NR, Dir. Henry Koster
This stage hit gets the Hollywood treatment in the story of Elwood P. Dowd (Jimmy Stewart) who makes friends with a spirit taking the form of a human-sized rabbit named Harvey that only he sees (and a few privileged others.) After his sister tries to commit him to a mental institution, a comedy of errors ensues. Elwood and Harvey become the catalysts for a family mending its wounds and for romance to blossom
