TFA Presents Screening of AFTER TILLER, with Directors and Panel Discussion
The movie takes a calm and intellectual approach to an inflammatory subject, elevating what could have easily come off as propaganda into a reasoned and thoughtful work of journalism. – Miami Herald
They’re not heroes and they’re not demons. AFTER TILLER is an important reminder of the personal stories of doctors and mothers that can get lost in an issue as divisive as abortion. – Film Threat
The Tallgrass Film Association presents a special screening of the acclaimed documentary AFTER TILLER, with Co-Directors Martha Shane and Lana Wilson, on Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30 pm at the Orpheum Theatre. Tickets are $10 GA/$8 students/teachers/seniors/TFA members and are available online by clicking here, or at the door. (Advanced purchase is recommended.)
The film will be followed by a discussion featuring the Directors, as well as panelists Julie Burkhart (Founder & Director, South Winds Women’s Center) and Scott Stringfield, MD (Associate Director, Via Christi Family Medicine Residency, Associate Clinical Professor, University of Kansas School of Medicine, Board Chairman and Medical Director, Choices Medical Clinic, Inc.)
"We made AFTER TILLER to shed more light, rather than more heat, on this issue," said directors Martha Shane and Lana Wilson. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share the film with the community in Wichita, and hope that it will be a valuable contribution to their ongoing dialogue."
AFTER TILLER, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, has gone on to play at film festivals around the world, and is now enjoying a theatrical run around the country. It is TFA’s mission to provide an opportunity for audiences in south central Kansas to see important, authentic films that are being shared with festival and theatrical audiences across the globe but which would not otherwise screen in Wichita. These include films with a building momentum such as AFTER TILLER, as well as hidden gems too significant to ignore, which need an audience. TFA strives to present a neutral, sensitive and discerning look at a side to this issue rarely seen.
About the Film
In 2009, Dr. George Tiller of Wichita, Kansas- one of the only doctors in the US who performed third-trimester abortions-was assassinated inside his church. He was the eighth abortion clinic worker to be assassinated since the Supreme Court passed the Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion, in 1973. There are now only four doctors in the country-all former colleagues of Dr. Tiller-who openly provide late abortions, a procedure considered highly controversial even among those who consider themselves pro-choice. AFTER TILLER weaves together revealing interviews with the doctors that include intimate scenes from their private lives and inside their clinics, where they counsel and care for their patients. The personal and moral struggles of several of these women are revealed, forcing us to step into the shoes of both patient and practitioner as they confront the full complexity of each decision.
